"Heart failure" is a frightening term to hear. It sounds final, and it isn't. It means the heart isn't pumping blood as efficiently as it should, not that it has "failed" or stopped. It's a manageable, long-term condition in most cases, and breathlessness is often the first symptom patients notice.
When the heart can't pump efficiently, fluid can build up in the lungs and elsewhere in the body, making everyday activity, even walking or climbing stairs, feel harder than it should.
Echocardiography (2D Echo) is a key part of how Dr. Kulin Sheth evaluates heart failure. It shows how well the heart is pumping (ejection fraction) and helps identify the underlying cause. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is an additional measure of heart muscle function that may be used where clinically appropriate, alongside other findings. It isn't required for every heart failure diagnosis.
Management combines medication, lifestyle adjustments, and, in some cases, device therapy (ICD, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, or CRT, cardiac resynchronisation therapy) when the heart's rhythm or pumping pattern warrants it. Underlying causes, such as coronary artery disease or long-standing high blood pressure, are addressed alongside heart failure itself.
